Benefits of Whey Protein

Whey protein has been the subject of lots of health discussions recently. Here whey protein is explained together with its possible benefits and side effects.

What is Whey Protein

When cows milk is used to make cheese, whey is then produced which is either kept or thrown away. Whey protein is a group of proteins which are separated from whey. It is a mixture of lactoglobulin, alpha lactalbumin and serum albumin.

In a similar way to the protein in egg whites, whey protein can be irreversibly altered by heat. It becomes less bio-active when its made a part of the pasteurisation process. When not cooked, whey protein contains high concentrations of cysteine and glutathione which is an antioxidant that is important in increased fitness and health. Whey protein which is bio active is a great source of protein but its protein content is reduced when it is heated therefore reducing the amount of cysteine found in it.

What Makes It Good for the Body

Whey protein is included in many low carb and high protein diets due to its large amount of essential and non essential acids as well of course as being low in fact and carbohydrates.

Whey Protein and Pregnant Mothers

Midwives and doctors are recommending an increased intake of whey protein due to its amino acids which is need by growing infants inside the pregnant women. Development of the baby is naturally improved by increasing your intake of whey protein. It is also proven to indirectly, improve the immune system of the baby. Whey protein helps the baby grow quicker and stronger and it is therefore more prepared to defends itself against any other health issues.

Whey Protein for Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is all about muscle growth and that's why whey protein is important. Research has shown that greater muscle development can be achieved due to whey protein.

How it Helps Athletes Busy Recovering from Old Injuries

Whey protein can help athletes heal faster and generally feel more healthy. Its used to add to diets who are suffering with problems with their immune systems.

A Weapon against Degenerative Diseases

Degenerative diseases are known as one of the worst health issues to suffer from. Different people suffer with various levels of severity but they generally cover three systems in the human body : the nervous system, the muscular system and the skeletal system.

Degenerative diseases are usually treated using surgical operations, chemotherapy and a special diet although are generally not curable. Because of its rehabilitative benefits, whey protein can be used with regard to muscle growth. Many diseases have symptoms which cause muscle growth and strength to decline - increased whey protein can assist with this.

Where to Buy Whey Protein

Most health shops and even supermarkets these days stock commercial whey protein.

Ending with a Warning

Although whey protein is proven to be good for your body - too much is not beneficial. Complications of the liver are a side effect of too much whey protein. Don't forget that your liver is one of the most important organs in your body - don't abuse it!

Lactose intolerant sufferers must consult your nutritionist or doctor before taking whey protein - some forms of whey protein contain more lactose than others.
